Are you new to playing the oud and wondering where to start with tuning? In this guide, we’ll walk you through the best oud tuning for beginners: the DO-DO tuning, also known as C to C tuning. This tuning is not only easy to understand but also provides an excellent foundation for mastering the basics of the oud.
What Is DO-DO Tuning?
DO DO tuning, or C to C, refers to tuning the first and last strings of the oud to the note C. Specifically, the first string (the highest-pitched string) is tuned to C4, and the sixth string (the lowest-pitched string) is tuned to C2. The remaining strings are tuned as follows:
- 1st string: C4
- 2nd string: G
- 3rd string: D
- 4th string: A
- 5th string: F
- 6th string: C (C2)
This arrangement is known as low oud tuning and is one of the two most common tunings in Arabic oud playing, the other being the high F tuning (F to F). Watch this video to learn why I don’t use high F tuning.
Why DO-DO Tuning Is the best oud tuning for Beginners
There are three key reasons why this tuning is perfect for those starting out:
- Easier Access to Melodic Strings: The first four strings (C, G, D, A) are the core of most oud techniques and melodies. With this tuning, these strings are closer together, reducing the strain on your fingers as you learn.
- Rich Low Range: DO-DO tuning provides a deep, resonant low end, which is essential for the warm, traditional sound of Arabic music.
- Focus on the First Position: Beginners primarily learn to play in the first position, where your hand stays near the top of the fretboard. This tuning makes it easy to reach all the essential notes, including quarter tones and maqam scales.

To start tuning your oud to DO-DO, follow the string order from the bottom (first string) to the top (sixth string). Use a tuner or tuning app to ensure accuracy. Once tuned, practice simple scales and maqams to familiarize yourself with the sound and feel of the instrument.
